In a perfect world, you could take a day off from camming any time you're under the weather without having to worry about the toll it will take on your finances. Unfortunately, bills still need to be paid on time, and that doesn't always lend itself to resting when you need it the most.
One benefit of camming is that you can still work without the worry of spreading germs to coworkers and clients, but it can be hard to feel sexy when you're not in the mood. However, if you have no choice but to log on, here are some things you can do to make your shift go a little more smoothly during cold and flu season.
MAKEUP CAN MAKE MIRACLES
Trying not to look sick when you feel like the walking dead is no easy feat, but the right makeup can work wonders in situations like these. Plus, it only requires a few minor adjustments to your usual routine.
- Skin care is essential when you're not feeling well, so treat your face to a good moisturizer and some cooling under-eye patches before you get started.
- Layer on a mid-full coverage foundation, but don't feel like you have to cake it on just because you're sick. Instead, touch up your problem areas — hello, dark circles — with a good concealer and set with a translucent powder to keep your makeup from moving.
- After your base sets, dust on a bit of bronzer to give your skin a sunny glow.
- Keep your eye makeup light and stick to waterproof mascara and eyeliner. Your eyes may be watery, and you don't want eye makeup running all over your face during a show. You should also try to avoid false lashes for the same reason.
GET COMFORTABLE
This can seem impossible when you're feeling under the weather, but there are a few things you can do to make yourself a little more comfortable during your shift. Aside from the usual cold medications — we'll leave that part up to you — there are plenty of DIY tricks that can ease your symptoms. For example, if you're congested, burn eucalyptus and mint-scented candles in your room to soothe your airways and make it easier to breathe. As a bonus, these scents can combat headaches as well.
For an ultra-comforting, almost spa-like experience, try a vapor shower before or after your shift. Vicks VapoShower Aromatherapy Shower Bombs are amazing for this use, but if you can't find them, you can look up some super-easy DIY recipes on YouTube so you can make your own. And don't forget the basics like hot tea, which can soothe your symptoms as you try to put on a good show.
KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO TAP OUT
Don't be afraid to tell fans you aren't feeling well, and don't push yourself to do anything you don't have the energy for. The important thing is that you do what's best for you. That might mean taking breaks between private shows or declining to fulfill more strenuous types of requests. If you're feeling particularly crummy and all the scented candles and cold remedies in the world won't help, it's best to sign off and get some rest. Sure, you won't be making money, but pushing your body too far could make you take even longer to recover.
ENCOURAGE FANS TO BUY CONTENT WHILE YOU REST
Instead of suddenly going silent, use social media, as well as your platform’s messaging system, to let fans know you're feeling sick and will return soon. Post frequently to remind them of where they can purchase your content, and let them know they can still shower you with tips and gifts to help you feel better even when you're offline. Getting fans to spend money on you while you recover can ease the financial strain of being offline, and in many cases, gives them the feeling that they are “taking care of you” in your time of need. This is also an excellent time to direct them to your online wish lists if they want to cheer you up even further.
ALWAYS PUT YOUR HEALTH FIRST
Whether you choose to power through a cam show or binge Netflix shows under the blankets until you're better, make sure you always put your health first. Remember, you are the star, and your fans — and bank account — will benefit most from having you in tip-top condition!
