Psychology Of Selling Porn

Editor's note: One of the biggest mistakes people make in this business is to de-personalize our prospects and customers. We tend to think in terms of traffic, of raw and unique visitors, and do so while forgetting that these visitors are people – people who are ruled by emotion and impulse, and who can be guided to do as you wish through the application of basic psychology. Here's one webmaster's perspective on it all:

What's with all this psychology bullshit? Just hammer out a couple of galleries a day, use an auto submitter and be done with it. Nope. There's more to it. Put yourself in a horny porn surfer's place. When you click on to a website, what makes you click on a link or picture or video? Is it the design, is it the bold text or a banner with blinking lights? I put it to you that it's what turns you on. That is the key to kicking off a clicking frenzy among your visitors.

Content
While producing or buying a horny sex video, you need to follow certain guidelines. There is no need for an elaborate story line, and the ending is more appreciated with a face full of cum. What you really need to focus on is the start. There has to be a situation which the surfer will connect to. Something which he likely has fantasized about. That is what will turn him on when he sees it. Amateur and reality porn are hot because the situation is something which flicks a switch somewhere in the surfer's consciousness.

Site Navigation
It's often been written that simply designed websites are more successful. The reason why is simple too. There are two things you have to consider: The computer awareness level of the visitor and his knowledge of the domain ('domain' here means the field or sector or in adult biz terms, the niche). The gap between the level of the visitor for these two factors and the actual level of your site has to be carefully balanced and monitored. Keep the navigation simple enough for the average surfer. Monitor your traffic and find out the level of your surfers as to the amount of knowledge they have about your niche. Cater to that level.

Customer Retention
The life blood of the adult industry is recurring billing. Your site will not grow unless you have a sufficient number of rebills. Here's where you can adopt certain strategies to ensure rebills. The important thing is not to make the surfer think whether to cancel or not. If he thinks about it, he's most likely to cancel. So, keep something special in reserve for him about 10 days before the billing cycle, with the promise of a special every month. Most likely, he'll get a favorable impression, and won't think too hard about the rebill.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is that you have to give the customer a hard-on and keep it hard for as long as you want him to keep paying you. What you do and how you do it may vary, but that is what it's all about.

How to Know When Hosting Upgrades Are Really Needed

I was reminded about an annoyingly common experience that often frustrates website owners: upgrades. Sometimes, an upgrade of physical system resources like CPU, RAM or storage really is required to solve a problem or improve performance… but how do you know you’re not just being upsold?
