Gay Porn Gains Acceptance?

Jenna Jameson is a highly accomplished adult actress who has been embraced by mainstream culture to a significant degree. Her book "How to Make Love Like a Porn Star" became a runaway bestseller. She was profiled in Rolling Stone and New York magazine called her a "cultural icon." I could go on and on and forget to mention that she was interviewed in person for the Herald Leader of Lexington, Ky.

The beguiling Savannah Samson has lent her name to Sogno Uno wine, served to Park Avenue pillars of society at restaurant Daniel. Samson outdid even herself on that one by appearing in May 2007 on "The Tristan Mysteries," a radio series exploring Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde." She has said "I love opera and enjoy going to the Met whenever my schedule permits... I think I'm in a unique position to discuss the sensual aspects of 'Tristan und Isolde' characters and of opera in general."

Yet the same anti-gay prejudices that reign in society at large apply double to those involved in the production of gay porn. Gay porn professionals are not knowingly invited for CNN interviews. Notice please my use of the word "knowingly." Look what happened in the case of right-wing extremist Matt Sanchez, who with the stage name Rod Majors appeared in 1994 in "Tijuana Toilet Tramps" and in a later release, Mansex Meltdown."

After ending his involvement in porn, he served in the Marines and then attended Columbia University. As a supporter of George W. Bush's "Shock and Awe" madness unleashed on Iraq, during which huge bombs were dropped in the middle of a teeming city, Sanchez encountered ideological opposition at Columbia. A particularly large fuss was created by somebody there referring to him as a "baby killer." He became a darling of the right wing, which wanted to vilify universities for not thinking in lockstep with the war criminals in the White House. He befriended Ann Coulter, who has exploited anti-gay bigotry to motivate reactionary voters. He was given the Jeanne Kirkpatrick Academic Freedom Award at CPAC. The award created controversy, particularly as Sanchez was associating with rabid gay haters even though in the '90s he had many times jerked off with groups of men in various New York City gym steam rooms. His porn past came to light.

The reactionary columnist Michelle Malkin had been trumpeting Sanchez's "baby-killer" case against Columbia University. She said: "Should CPAC organizers be embarrassed if the rumors about his alleged porn star past are true? Well, yes. Next time, they should do more extensive background research before handing out an honor with Jeanne Kirkpatrick's name on it."

On a different front, but equally damaging, there is a large group of gay people that has taken it upon themselves to have a holier-than-thou attitude toward those involved in gay pornography.

LOGO, the gay-content TV channel, has not so much as once had a gay porn figure on for an interview, though they have shown "Mommy Dearest" 1,001 times. I'm sure it's a profitable business decision for them, as so few gay men are interested in gay porn and its big players. Two of the leading anchors at LOGO are my personal friends, yet obviously, the word from up high in the power structure there is that they do not want to be associated with entertainment depicting what homos do with each other in the nude.

In sum, the absurd, sex-denying Puritan tradition is slowly being cleansed out of the nation's bloodstream as far as heterosexual porn goes, but is resolutely in place regarding gay porn. Many gay people are contributing to this anti-sex, psychologically unhealthy attitude. I sometimes hear people alleging that gay porn is everywhere, opening doors, making advances in the healthy acceptance of sex as a normal and beautiful part of life, and I wonder what they have been smoking.
