PHE started its employee Wellness Program in late 2007, with incentives and educational opportunities. It regularly has events in-house to encourage active and health-conscious employees, in addition to a reward system for reported physical activity. After a health screening on-site in spring of 2008, the number of participating employees jumped more than 125 percent from the same screening offered in 2006.
“The biggest surprise for me was seeing that employees really want to improve their health,” said Tom Underwood, director of Human Resources. “They just don’t know what to do or how to reach their goals. A well-developed plan that includes milestones and incentives seems to be the answer.”
NCAHC held its eighth annual conference and awards ceremony in early October. Each year, the NCAHC recognizes an organization or employer who has demonstrated compelling vision, leadership and excellence in their commitment to improving health outcomes in North Carolina communities.
PHE was one of a select few area companies honored with a nomination this year.
