Telecom Corp. Buys Porn Site

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Telecom Corp. of New Zealand, the country’s primary telecom provider, purchased a porn site this week to prevent users of the company’s new online retail space from accidentally stumbling into adult territory.

Although exact numbers were not disclosed, Telecom Corp. reportedly put out a sizeable outlay of cash to purchase Ferrit.com, part of a series of websites linked to adult affiliate PornVille.net.

The purchase follows the November launch of Telecom Corp.’s Ferrit.co.nz property, a mainstream retail site that sells everything from lipstick to mobile phones.

In an official statement released by Telecom Corp. on Jan. 27, the company paid “five figures” for PornVille’s Ferrit.com property. PornVille is one of several sites run by TL Management Inc., which also owns reality site EdPowers.com, BusStopTales.com and TheLuckyBastard.com

The Telecom Corp statement said the company had been in negotiations to buy the site since last year, prior to the launch of its online retail space.

Prior to the buyout, Google searches for “Ferrit.com” yielded results such as “Welcome to PornVille.net” and “Premium mega porn.”

Several inquiries by XBiz to contact information listed for TL Management Inc. received no response by press time. A WhoIs search for the company’s numerous properties all were returned “(403) Forbidden,” which means the owners of the site did not authorize the search request, though no reason was given.
